Planning the honeymoon - advice from Oundle Travel

Once you have decided on a date for the wedding, begun to think about venues, colour schemes and dresses, thoughts will inevitably turn to the honeymoonWhilst traditionally the honeymoon would have been organised by the groom, increasingly this is something that many couples enjoy planning together.  Modern couples are not limiting themselves to the traditional honeymoon either, with everything from backpacking in India to a quiet weekend in the Cotswolds on the menu.

Established for over 25 years, Oundle Travel is a local independent, owner-managed agency who aims to provide unbiased and professional travel advice.  With such a wealth of experience of organising honeymoons we asked Director Paula Cockcroft for some tips on planning a successful honeymoon.

-          Plan and book the honeymoon as soon as you have a date for your wedding – to give you a greater chance of getting exactly what you want

-          Give some thought to what kind of honeymoon you want - from a two week idyllic break in the Seychelles, to a boutique hotel in Tuscany, to a luxurious European city break, or a visit to a stunning Spa in the English countryside there is a wide range of options open to you.  Whilst some couples want to spend their time bungee-jumping, others want sand, sea and sun.  The key is that you both will enjoy it.  It is also worth remembering that after the stress of organising a wedding, a bit of relaxation afterwards can be very welcome!

-          Check your destination is compatible with your wedding date – ideally avoiding the monsoon season! – or, if you have your heart set on a particular place, then work your wedding  around that, or consider taking your honeymoon later in the year.

-          Consider inviting your guests to buy vouchers to contribute either towards the cost of your honeymoon, to upgrade flight seats, or pre-book spa treatments or a private dinner for two.  Oundle Travel has their own Bridal Registry Service, and will supply inserts printed to your specification and to complement your wedding invitations.  'This has proved really successful' comments Paula, 'couples are able to choose their perfect honeymoon or enhance their existing booking'.

-          Remember, if the bride wishes to travel under her married name, she will need to contact the Passport Office well in advance to change the name in her passport.

-          Don’t forget to organise some insurance.  It is vital to make sure that you are covered should one of you lose a bag or fall ill – and make sure your wedding and engagement rings are covered if you decide to take them with you.

-          Enjoy spending some time with your new husband or wife!

The agency also offers an appointment service, this is popular wtih couples on a Saturday morning, where you can relax, have a freshly made coffee and discuss honeymoon plans at your leisure.
